At the beginning of the year I wrote an essay about what makes me come alive, or what excites me. Attached below are links to the writing
What makes me come alive is a question that I have put much thought into. “What topic could I just keep talking about non-stop” is what I thought when I received this prompt. After pondering about my life, one thing keeps coming up in my mind; I love teaching math.
Now math is very different from most subjects. Instead of having to be creative, or think outside of the box, math is all about work and practice. It requires more mechanical thought instead of creative thought, and this, in part, is also what makes me love this subject. It makes me come alive because of the way that I think. I enjoy going by the book, or solving problems with definitive answers, and clear ways to reach the answer.
Every now and then, I would have a classmate or a friend who needs help with a problem, so I would go and help them out. For example, just this morning in study hall, I spent most of my time assisting two of my friends who are sort of struggling in math. I taught them each question step by step, until they understood it. Doing this made me “come alive.” I felt like I could go on and on about the different ways to solve these problems and it just felt good helping them. It might sound abnormal but math is something that I genuinely enjoy. To some, solving long math problems may sound like a tedious and boring task, but I actually enjoy doing these long problems. Mainly because it isn’t just a mindless task, but because it engages my brain so I can focus on the question. Since I was born with a condition called ADHD, there are very few things that catch my focus, but doing and teaching math does.
In conclusion, through intensive thought and inspection, I have been able to deduce what makes me come alive. When I am doing math I don’t exactly think of it as work, I think of it as something fun. Similarly to video games and spending time with my friends, when I am doing or teaching math, time flies. Therefore I am certain, without a shadow of a doubt, that teaching math is what makes me come alive.
Reflection:
Through writing this paper, I actually found out what I was most passionate about. To be honest, when I first began to write this paper I was going to talk about something monotonous, like gaming, or eating. But, after I had put more thought into it, I decided that it would be better for me to write about my love for math instead. In my “what makes me come alive” writing, I went through several different ideas before finally settling on the topic of Math. Hope you enjoy reading!
