My Searching for Bobby Fischer Essay

My Searching For Bobby Fischer essay was written in class, and I did a comparison between myself, other books, and the characters in this movie.

In the film “Searching for Bobby Fischer” there are many comparisons that I can make between the plot of the film and my personal life. Some of the connections that I can make are mainly Josh’s father and my parents. Another comparison that I could make would be between Bruce and my siblings. I would compare Vinnie with the teachers at ICS.

The first comparison would be between Josh’s father and my parents, where I know that they love me and want the best for me, but they still are, at times, very hard on me. Throughout the course of the movie we can see Josh’s father being very supportive of Josh’s gift and love for chess. But it comes to a point where Josh’s father cares more about chess than Josh himself, and we can see this very clearly during one of the tournaments. Josh seems to have purposefully lost, and his father was really mad, he left Josh sitting out in the rain and continuously talked down to him. However, later on in the movie Josh’s father makes spectacular amounts of character development. I can see this in my life when my parents will be really hard on me, and will scream at me, but in the end they would still come to me and tell me that it’s all for my own good. I know that they are only doing it because they think that they are doing the best for me.

The second comparison would be between Bruce and my siblings. Similarly to Josh’s father, Bruce shows a sort of hard love but in the end we can tell that he cares about Josh. This can be seen in my siblings as they have this kind of hard love when dealing with me. In the end, they congratulate me if they see results. They teach me things things that will help me succeed, and they believe that the final result is all the matters, like how Bruce thinks that winning is all that matters in the end.

Finally, I would make the comparison between Vinnie and the teachers at ICS. Many of the teachers have this sort of casual attitude that will help me learn, but in the end is contrast to the teachings of my family at home. For example, the teachers at ICS typically say that I shouldn’t spend too much time on homework, and frequent myself with breaks. Yet at home, I am not supposed to take breaks, and should study and work until I have finished the task at hand. In the end I do a bit of both, so that is a way that I could compare my life to Vinnie and Bruce.

The movie has several very obvious main characters, that I could draw comparisons between my life and the characters in the movie. Such as Josh’s dad and my parents, Bruce and my siblings, and Vinnie and the teachers at ICS. Not only is it a comparison of character, but also the relationship between these characters.

Reflection:

This writing piece was something that I wrote in class, attached below will be a link to the essay, as well as some of the questions that I filled out before writing it. Answering these questions really helped me have a deeper understanding of what I had watched, and it helped me when I wrote the essay because I had a clear idea of what all the characters were. I could also draw comparisons between different characters from what I had watched because I answered these questions. Enjoy reading!
