At the end of chapter 7 Amir faces a problem, he watched his best friend get raped, and yet he has done nothing. He is overcome with the guilt of that incident and feels as if he turned his back on Hassan. At the end of chapter 12 when Soraya is sharing her secrets, Amir is jealous because he wished he could freely talk about the incident as Soraya has. When Rahim Khan says “there is a chance to be good again” he offers Amir a way to redeem himself for what he has done, and perhaps erase the guilt that he harbors in him.
As said earlier Amir is envious of Soraya being able to openly divulge her secrets and not be weighed down with it while Amir is still affected by it every day. This is significant because of the guilt that he harbors affects all the decisions that he makes. Every action and everything he does after the incident is affected by this incident of him not doing anything to stop Hassan’s rape. It is very clear throughout the book how much this haunts him through recurring nightmares and constant guilt.
I have had mistakes from the past that haunt me to this day that I, to this day, would rather not talk about it, and I often think about it before I sleep. Although it isn’t nearly to the scale of Amir’s problem, it still is something that is recurring. However, it does not lead me and govern all of the decisions I make because the severity of this problem pales into comparison to Amir’s issue. However, I have spoken to people about it and it really feels a lot better, like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, so I believe the best way to fix a problem is to talk to someone, rather than leave it to yourself.
Reflection:
I decided to add this essay to my blog because I believe it is my most well-written essay amongst all of my other essays. I spent the longest time trying to pick out pieces to answer the question properly and even talked about my own experiences.
